Update - 2010 Land Speed Racing Season

First, the surprise of 2009 for us, It seems Kevin won the El Mirage 200 MPH club rookie of the year. I didn't know they still did this because they don't have a winner every year; so the SCTA banquet on the 30th of January 2010, he and the team will be recognized!

Tool Updates

Last year we bent some sheet metal (that's an understatement) on our custom built Kruse aluminum body, so I wanted to be able to do maintenance on the body in the future, if needed. To that end we've purchased an English wheel with 7 anvils, a planishing hammer, and a bead roller also with several dies. Now we might be able to screw up the stuff we're trying to fix even more! Should be fun……

I also got a Linde mig welder as we always seem to need a bracket, stand, or widget welded. This will replace the little buzz box mig I've been trying to use. An example is our push bar would start to bend when you pulled the 'chute at 220 mph plus. I built a thicker tube and inserted it in the bar with a little rosette weld to keep it in place. This welder will be a big plus to that end, and probably allow us to make some huge screw ups now….. lol.

During the season break the boys and I have started to make the car easier to work on and / or hopefully faster. Some of the things we've done include lowering the hood scoop 2" and blending it into the body. Adding an alternator so we never have a voltage drop issue and when we go to turbos and EFI it's important not to have a voltage drop because it can make life tough when you need it least.

We're also adding more weight and ground effects tunnels for Bonneville. I bought a rear wing that we will mount off the rearend for use at El Mirage just in case. I don't think we'll need the wing because Kevin said the car handled well on the dry lake as bad as the course was in 2009. But I want to be ready just in case we need it.

I also bought new wheels and 23" tires (down from 25") to lower the car and help keep air from under the car.

I've ordered another set of quick change gears for El Mirage as the ones we were running were not the best for the speeds we needed to run.

Modified at El Mirage

Of course the standard engine maintaince along with some new paint and striping is still on the list of things we want to do too.

Lastly I would like to thank you ALL for the help, support, and encouragement you've given us over the last few years. Projects like this take lots of time and effort (and also a few bucks) but it's important for us to remember everyone who participates either by helping or watching, we appreciate it immensely.

Thanks,
Mike LeFevers & Family
